I know what you're thinking.. Isn't Cheyenne off camping in Joshua Tree right now? Well YES I am.. And I'm not on the internet right now either, in fact I'm probably helping to pack up camp and cook breakfast. That's the beauty of scheduled posting.
So back in my pre-baby days, my friend,
Kate gave me an orientation when our husbands were both at SOS together. Since she had a 7 month old at the time (wow- has it been that long ago?!), I picked her brain when it came to pregnancy, delivery, and parenting. Her amazing son, Jack gave me a false sense of timing when it comes to walking because I remember he was walking at 7 months... so it being my first child experience where I was actually paying attention, I thought that's when kids walk.. Thanks a lot Jack! Anyway, something else I picked up from her that I decided then and there that I was going to do when it was my turn: making my own baby food! And Viola! It's my turn and I'm enjoying the simplicity of making Riley's food. So far he's enjoyed:
- Rice
- Oatmeal
- Sweet Potatoes
- Butternut Squash
- Carrots
- Green Peas
- Avacado
- Beets
- Apples
- Bananas
- Pears (with Cinnamon)
- Mango
MMMMM.. it's making my hungry just typing it! I could do better with incorporating his food with what I'm making for dinner, but even without trying to coordinate, it's pretty simple. Most of it is just a matter of cooking it (usually baking), blending it (I use the Magic Bullet- it's perfect for the task) and then I put some in the fridge and some in the freezer. So EASY!! And I ♥ (sorry, I just learned how to do the ♥ symbol and I like using it♥♥♥! Alt 3 if you're wondering) knowing exactly what is in the food and that there are ZERO preservatives and chemicals!!! And it's cheaper than the jars of baby food too! There are great books with recipes but for starters, I totally recommend
this site! One step closer to my Earth Ship- Trav. *wink

I broke it down... bananas, sweet potatoes, peas, and carrots ARE cheaper. However, most fruits (like peaches) and meats are not cheaper.
Also, the magic bullet IS great. They should really rename it the baby-food bullet...since it seems to puree everything you don't want pureed anyway.
Hey, didn't I give you that website?
Wow, for not having started until 6 mos you have certainly introduced a *lot*!
Chey, I won't harp for long, because my true intentions are to help and not hinder...but just relax, because if you're always anxious about the "next step", you will be like me, who is looking nostalgically at Ben's baby pictures, wondering "where did it all go?!?" I know that the first time around, when hindsight is not yet available, it's easy to always be looking fwd to that next step. But, I guess that's where 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, etc children come from. While I enjoyed Ben so much, I am *relishing* Lydia to the point that it makes me sick! I look at her and can't stand myself. There are times for me that I look at Lydia and compare to when Ben did things, and when they aren't the same, I have to keep telling myself what I am sure you have heard many a time: babies have their own schedule, and the will do the things when they are ready. Lydia still hasn't rolled over, even when Ben already has. There are plenty of things, too, where Lydia is different from Ben. She picked up nursing *way* better than Ben did! :) I can't wait to meet that Riley, he sure looks like his dad!
I can't believe I'm just now reading this post! Don't you just LOVE making baby food? I seriously gave me such a sense of pride. I'm looking forward to making Ellie's food in a couple months, too. I'm putting it off as long as possible because she is my baby.
On a side note, I get to giveaway a So Easy Fresh Baby Food Making kit on The Shopping Mama blog!
Oh, and I think technically, Jack was only cruising and not walking yet. :)
Thanks for the shout out Chey.
I love the picture of the food! It looks so yummy.
I'm assuming the picture is of your 'magic' blended foods - they sure are colorful (and I know it's not artificial!). It makes ME want a taste, they look so appealing! I'm impressed. Of course I did up a lot of yuor foods too! Also I hope you don't think that you or your bro walked at 7, 8, or 9 months!! You walked around furniture for MONTHS before you took off and walked across spaces! YOU didn't let go and walk to me by yourself until you were 14 months. Travis walked to me ON his birthday. I thought you were going to be early because you stood pretty early. You practiced around objects and with a hand to give you confidence for a LONG time. Seven months walking would be really early. Nature knows when those little legs can support and balance will come when it's right. Personally, I think Riley is at the head of the class in most things. He's a bright and curious little guy!!
